We’ve got a job for you! Lifeguarding is a leadership position that will provide you skills to handle emergencies in, on and around the water. If you are at least 15 years of age or older, a good swimmer, and want to learn lifesaving skills – you can be on your way to become a certified a lifeguard! Important: Participants must be strong swimmers (Level 4 swimming skills or equivalent). The pre-test will consist of swimming 300 yards continuously, (100 freestyle, 100 breast stroke and 100 choice of freestyle or breaststroke). Participants must also swim 20 yards from wall, retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7ft. of water and swim with the brick 20 yards on back to the side of the pool within 1 minute 40 seconds and tread for 2 minutes using legs only. Important information to know regarding lifeguard/instructor courses: Taking these courses does not guarantee employment with the City of Glendale. Those 16-year-olds and older can apply with the city of Glendale; the city will be conducting interviews to hire summer, certified water safety instructors and lifeguards (minimum age is 15 years old can become Lifeguard certified, minimum age is 16 be become certified as a Water Safety Instructor – but the City of Glendale is preferred hiring those who will be 16 years and older on or before May 1st, 2026. Candidates must be certified to be eligible to work as a Lifeguard or above at our two aquatic centers.) There will be online modules that must be completed prior to start of each class session starting AFTER the first Saturday pre-test. Participants must attend and fully participate in every scheduled, full-length class as well as complete all online modules to pass. No refunds/make-ups can be given for a missed class or classes cancelled within 7 days from the class's start date. The book is located online but may be requested in print by student once online class portion begins. Refunds/credits will not be given, unless a class is cancelled by the city of Glendale. If a participant is unable to pass the pre-test, a refund is issued if it’s requested on the day of the pretest, minus $50 skills assessment and administrative fee. Union Hills Blvd. unless otherwise noted. Health Procedure and Disclosure: Students will be in close contact with other participants for the entire duration of the course. This is mandatory. Do NOT come to class sick. If sick, please inform the instructor via phone, depending on the illness, you may be moved to another class in the future. Once we reach the end of our course offerings, the participant will not be able to pass the Lifeguard Course, due to no further class time available.
