About This Event
Artist’s books are books that are art objects. They can combine text, images and multi-media techniques to express a creative idea or simply be decorative expressions in themselves. This workshop will introduce students to the traditions and methods of the handmade book, as well as the expressive possibilities available with artist books. Begin with simple foundational structures such as accordion style, and progress through more complex historical structures such as books sewn-on supports, Coptic, and Japanese stab bindings. Exploration with materials is encouraged and students can combine other media (i.e. printmaking, photography, digital imagining, letter press, 3D sculpture and, drawing and painting) that they are familiar with in creating their handmade books. In addition, the student will be introduced to techniques of creating original cover papers such as marbling, suminagashi, as well as handmade paper. Price includes a $50 studio and materials fee which covers all basic supplies. Students may bring supplemental materials to class.
