Description
The purpose of this program is to offer free lifeguard certification training to area teens and adults willing to work for Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) as lifeguards. To qualify for the Durham Aquatic School, participants must be at least 16 years of age. They must also register for the DAS Pre-Course Swim Test which will be held before the online course begins. Each participant must be able to pass the prerequisite tests. Pre-requisites: Participant must be at least 16 years of age. They must be able to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. This may be performed using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both swimming strokes-no backstroke or sidestroke allowed. Additionally, participants must be able to tread water for two minutes using only their legs-arms must be out of the water or hands in the armpits. Lastly, participants must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a ten-pound object from a depth of, at least seven feet, and return to the starting point holding the object with both hands while swimming and exit the pool. The retrieval of the object, return to side and exit needs to be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds or less. Both hands must be holding the object with the face at or near the surface. This is a blended learning class. Participants must complete the 7-hour online portion of the course prior to the first class. Space is limited, so apply early!
