Description
Welcome to the Gaddy Wild Bird Garden Volunteer Group and thank you for your interest in assisting Tower Grove Park’s forestry team in managing this important bird habitat area. The Gaddy Wild Bird Garden is a natural area encompassing approximately 1.48 acres in the northwest area of Tower Grove Park; this area has been designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, and more than 200 resident and migratory bird species have been recorded within the Garden. TGP’s Forestry Team is training volunteers to help park staff achieve management goals and improve this habitat area. TGP Forestry will be hosting multiple training sessions throughout the summer and fall to prepare for working days during the dormant season. Training sessions will be hands-on and will focus on multiple aspects of park and habitat management. Training topics include:Plant identification. We will focus on learning about both our highly valued native species that are beneficial to the habitat, and the highly invasive species that need to be removed from the park. Tool types, uses, and workplace safety. TGP Forestry will provide all necessary tools, how each tool functions, and how to use all equipment safely.Volunteers are allowed to bring and use personal tools, as long as they are approved by Forestry Supervisor Joseph Hart. Green waste recycling. All debris created through training sessions and working days will be recycled back into the Garden. For example, woody debris can be stacked into piles which creates habitat for birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and most importantly, insects. Urban ecology. As we focus on the training topics listed above, we will maintain a focus on educating and understanding what our management goals are, and how we achieve them. This opportunity will run from 12:15 pm – 2:45 pm.We meet at the Gaddy Wild Bird Garden, located in the northwest area of the Park.Who can attend? This work requires tools.
