Historic Oak View County Park, 4028 Carya Dr, Raleigh, NC 27610, USA

Opening | History & Cultural Education

Description

Explore the history of Oak View's hundred year-old pecan grove. You'll learn how the grove came to be through the practice of diversification, as well as the farmers who cultivated the nuts over a thirty year period from the early to mid-1900s. The program also covers the challenges the grove has faced over the years, as well as who history teaches us was instrumental in the nut's initial commercialization. The program ends with an opportunity to harvest pecans directly from the grove. Registration is required for all participants. The program will take place outdoors, so please come prepared with weather appropriate clothing. It will include walking and standing on brick paths and uneven grass surfaces in the pecan grove.
