Description

Robert Browning lived through the heart of the Victorian era but was an outspoken social critic atypical of that time. NOTE: he did not write sugary love poems. That was HIS WIFE TO HIM. He is famous for developing the Dramatic Monologue, a poem in which there is a single speaker. All action and speech of others is reflected in what that speaker says. Browning’s works examine such weighty issues such as the corruption of the renaissance church, the mistreatment of the Jews, the mistreatment of women, how to order one’s life, the nature of God, and the nature of heaven and hell. He framed these ideas in striking and sometimes grotesque word images.
