About This Event
This seven week class will meet the following Saturdays: 10/24-12/12 (Skip 11/28) Basic Skills teaches the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating. Four progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. Upon completion of the Basic levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating. All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated. Discover, Learn, and Play β This introductory level allows new skaters (age 6+ years) with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate. Basic 1 Curriculum A - Sit on ice and stand upB - March forward across the iceC - Forward two-foot glideD - DipE - Forward swizzles (6β8 in a row)F - Backward wiggles (6β8 in a row)G - Beginning snowplow stop (on one or two feet)Bonus Skill - Two-foot hop in place. Health and Safety:Β The safety of our skaters is our top priority. We encourage the use of helmets (hockey, bike, etc.), especially for younger or beginner skaters, and ask that all participants follow rink guidelines and coach instructions at all times. What to Bring:Β Warm, comfortable clothing, gloves, socks, and properly fitted skates (rental skates available if needed, included in the cost of the class). We do have gloves you may borrow in case you forget, butΒ we do not have helmets. We have free lockers available for use; we are not responsible for items left in the lobby or common areas. Level Up Evaluations: Skaters new to our program will be evaluated at the first class to ensure they are enrolled appropriately and may be moved to a different class. Each level has a list of skills to learn in order for a skater to move up to the next level. Once a skater has shown competence on all the skills, they will be evaluated to see if they are ready to be moved up. This evaluation can happen at any time during the session. For skaters in Basic 1, once they have been approved for Basic 2, they will need to attend class at 7pm. Bring a Friend: On the second-to-last class date, each skater may bring a friend/sibling/parent to skate with them! We ask that these skaters arrive earlier than normal to get fitted with skates (if needed) and still have a chance to chat off-ice before class starts. Please remind them to bring warm clothing, gloves, socks, helmet, etc. Public Skating Passes:Β Each participant receives five public skating passes. To redeem these passes, simply come in on the day of a scheduled public session and let our front counter staff know that you would like to use your Learn to Skate passes. Remember that these passes can be shared with friends and family! VisitΒ RP Lumber Center Public Session ScheduleΒ for skate dates and times! These passes do not expire. Fitness Center/Track Passes:Β Each family receives two fitness center/track passes to show off the second floor of our facility. To redeem these passes, come in any time between 6am and 9pm (unless the rink is closed for a holiday) and let our front counter staff know that you would like to use your Learn to Skate passes. These passes do expire at the end of the session.
