Saturday Morning Clay - The Joy of Plate Making

Description

Plates are easy, just a flat slab with a bit of a rim. But disappointment can come when they emerge from the kiln. They crack straight across the bottom, or around that thin place from trimming. The too thick bottom bows up 30 degrees. Food gets lost in the corners, or falls off the rim. They are too heavy from a bad foot ring, or too light and they warp. The overly-decorated body rejects the beautiful meal you have prepared.... Or none of that can happen, and you create attractive, nicely balanced plates, functional for food, that you are proud to set on the table. We can do that! Starting with 8-9" lunch plates, the class will work toward completing four lunch plates and four matching 10" dinner plates. Also, platters and specialty plates (square, oblong, handled) will be explored as time permits. This class is best for students with some wheel experience.Includes instruction, glazes, firing, open studio time, and 25# clay. Additional clay: $18/25# new clay, $9/25# recycled clay.Instructor: Steve Briggs
