Description

Make two simple, hand-stitched leather items from scratch in this beginner workshop. We’ll start by creating a cardholder together, tracing and cutting leather from a pattern, using a chisel and awl, and learning basic saddle-stitching with two needles. Then, you’ll select a second project to get started on- a pouch or clutch. We will work with natural materials in this class, including leather that is “veg-tanned” by a centuries-old method that uses plant tannins and natural oils. It has a stiff structure, making it easy to sew by hand, and it will acquire a rich, natural patina over time. We’ll apply beeswax to the edges of our products and burnish them by hand to achieve a finished look. Try your hand with a variety of tools including skivers, stitch groovers, chisels, mallets, punches, and edge finishing tools to decide what suits you best. All materials provided. This is an in-person program.
