About This Event

This seven week class will meet the following Wednesdays: 10/21-12/9 (Skip 11/25) Ice Explorers is a class designed for our youngest skaters! Children ages 3-4 years are welcome to explore the ice with us and learn to skate! Note: children must be 3 years old by the first class. With a small class size and fun games, our youngest skaters will thrive and learn to skate in this specially designed class. For the Ice Explorers only, one experienced skater age 12+ is permitted to be on the ice (on skates) with the child for the first three classes. Off-ice orientation at the beginning of the first skating class and equipment check: Zamboni tour, proper fit and lacing of skates, appropriate attire, and safety helmets; practice falling and recovery, marching in place, dips, and one-foot balances. Ice Explorers Curriculum A - Fall down and get back up – off-ice B - Fall down and get back up – on-ice C - March in place (6-8 steps) D - March forward (4-6 steps) E - Standing dip Health and Safety: The safety of our skaters is our top priority. We encourage the use of helmets (hockey, bike, etc.), especially for younger or beginner skaters, and ask that all participants follow rink guidelines and coach instructions at all times. What to Bring: Warm, comfortable clothing, gloves, socks, and properly fitted skates (rental skates available if needed, included in the cost of the class). We do have gloves you may borrow in case you forget, but we do not have helmets. We have free lockers available for use; we are not responsible for items left in the lobby or common areas. Ice Explorers: The first class will be held off of the ice. We'll start the class with a Zamboni tour (parents/siblings encouraged to come along!). Then we'll practice some skills in shoes, then get fitted for skates, and practice those same skills in skates off the ice. Once the skaters are comfortable, then we'll lead them onto the ice to practice those same skills on the rink. Note: We allow one experienced skater age 12+ to go on the ice (wearing skates) with their Ice Explorer for the first few weeks. For the last few weeks, we ask that the Ice Explorer go onto the ice alone as part of their transition to the Snowplow level classes to follow. Level Up Evaluations: Skaters new to our program will be evaluated at the first class to ensure they are enrolled appropriately and may be moved to a different class. Each level has a list of skills to learn in order for a skater to move up to the next level. Once a skater has shown competence on all the skills, they will be evaluated to see if they are ready to be moved up. This evaluation can happen at any time during the session.  Bring a Friend: On the second-to-last class date, each skater may bring a friend/sibling/parent to skate with them! We ask that these skaters arrive earlier than normal to get fitted with skates (if needed) and still have a chance to chat off-ice before class starts. Please remind them to bring warm clothing, gloves, socks, helmet, etc. Public Skating Passes: Each participant receives five public skating passes. To redeem these passes, simply come in on the day of a scheduled public session and let our front counter staff know that you would like to use your Learn to Skate passes. Remember that these passes can be shared with friends and family! Visit RP Lumber Center Public Session Schedule for skate dates and times! These passes do not expire. Fitness Center/Track Passes: Each family receives two fitness center/track passes to show off the second floor of our facility. To redeem these passes, come in any time between 6am and 9pm (unless the rink is closed for a holiday) and let our front counter staff know that you would like to use your Learn to Skate passes. These passes do expire at the end of the session.
